Southampton & RMS Titanic
Colour United Kingdom GBAF 2021-1
Southampton is a port city in southern England and was the home port of the RMS Titanic, a British luxury liner that famously sank on its maiden voyage in 1912.
The Titanic was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and made its way to Southampton in April 1912 to begin its voyage to New York. Many of the ship's crew were from Southampton, and the city played a key role in the ship's preparation and launch.
On the evening of April 10, 1912, the Titanic left Southampton and made its way to Cherbourg, France, and then to Queenstown (now known as Cobh), Ireland, where it picked up additional passengers. The ship then set off across the Atlantic, but on April 14, it struck an iceberg and sank, resulting in the loss of more than 1,500 lives.
The sinking of the Titanic remains one of the most famous maritime disasters in history, and the story of the ship and its passengers continues to captivate people around the world. Today, visitors to Southampton can learn more about the city's connection to the Titanic at the SeaCity Museum, which features an exhibition dedicated to the ship and its ill-fated voyage. The museum includes artifacts from the Titanic, as well as interactive exhibits and displays that explore the history and legacy of the ship.
