Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a French military and political leader who rose to power during the French Revolution and went on to become one of the most influential figures in European history.
Born in Corsica, Napoleon attended military school in France and quickly rose through the ranks of the French army during the Revolution. In 1799, he staged a coup d'etat and became First Consul of France, effectively establishing a dictatorship. He later declared himself Emperor in 1804, ruling over France and much of Europe for the next decade.
Napoleon's military conquests transformed Europe, as he expanded the French Empire and conquered much of the continent. He also implemented a number of sweeping reforms, including the establishment of a civil legal code and the introduction of secular education.
However, Napoleon's ambitions ultimately proved his downfall. He suffered a number of military defeats, culminating in his exile to the island of Elba in 1814. He briefly returned to power in 1815, but was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo and exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he remained until his death in 1821.
Napoleon's legacy is complex and controversial, as he is both celebrated for his military genius and criticized for his dictatorial tendencies and the suffering he caused in his campaigns. Nonetheless, his impact on European history is undeniable, and he remains a subject of fascination and study to this day.
