An unusual document involving three different grand masters. Grand Master Marc Antonio Zondadari, Grand Master Emmanuel Pinto, Grand Master Antonio Manoel De Vilhena, all equally involved in this legal document bearing the Zondadari wax seal, signed and verified by the then Vice Chancellor Pinto, and Bailiff Antonio Manoel De Vilhena.The document was issued by Joseph Callus, a public notary in Valletta, Malta on 29 July 1720 and authenticated by Marc'Antonio Zondadari, the Grand Master of the Order of Malta at that time (countersigned by Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, later himself Grand Master as well). The document is a collection of agreements between certain merchants and Bailiff Antonio Manoel (later also a Grand Master) in order to pay for the good the merchants bought from a certain Emanuel Ribera of Lisbon. The transcribed agreements are the following, in the order of appearance (not in chronological order): Nr. 1.
On the 4th day of the month of December in the 14th Indiction[1] in the 1705th year.Magnificent Jacob Guicciard son of the late magnificent Henry, a citizen of the City of Valletta, known to me, the notary, being present in front of me, promised to give and pay, came over and paid, obliged and obliges to Fra Don Antonio Manoel,[2] the illustrious lord Bailiff of the Langue of Castilia and the Priory of Lusitania, the Knights Grand Cross, also known to me, the notary, being also present as a contractor, that the money changer[3] in this City of Valletta will ...[4] the counted money,[5] that is two hundred seventy-seven and nine tareni[6] until the end of the next April of 1706 without any exception, etc.[7]That, etc. it is 277.9., the half of that which Francis Lucan is obliged to pay from the five hundred fifty-five and six tareni that worths six hundred and seventy cruzados, the currency of the Kingdom of Lusitania,[8] on the account of nine tareni and ten and nine granos, the currency of Melita[9] and one cruzado through the aforementioned debtors Lucan and Peter Le Grangie, to Emanuel Ribera Lusitan who lives in the city of Lisbon, for the price of the goods which Lucan and Le Grangie themselves have and bought from the said Ribera and that the mentioned Guicciardus guarantor intervened in that two hundred seventy-seven scudos and nine tareni for the mentioned Lucan and the rest, the aforementioned six hundred and seventy cruzados were paid and funded by the illustrious lord Bailiff to the mentioned Ribera.The aforementioned Guicciardus effectively made this present obligation of the mentioned sum and conceded his rights of pursue, as the mentioned illustrious lord Bailiff ceded and cedes to the mentioned present Guicciard and receiving from him[10] every and each rights, activities, accounts and causes etc. which he had and has and could have in the future in the mentioned two hundred seventy seven scudos and the nine tareni against the aforementioned Francis Lucan and any other person or good who and which are bound to this case in any way or by any means, right and scripture, public or private, or in any other way and consequence etc. being etc. that any way, etc.That rights of the payment already made by the aforementioned illustrious lord Bailiff granting therefore ceded and cedes to the granting lord what he had and has and not otherwise, etc.Which all, etc.Sworn thus the illustrious lord Bailiff, touching the cross of his garment, etc. as well the aforementioned magnificent Guicciard, touching the sacraments, etc. where, etc.Issued in Melita in this City of Valletta, Epiphanius Comalus, son of Michael and Francis Fanugia, son of the late Joseph being present as witnesses, etc. On the 29th day of the month of May, in the 14th Indiction, 1706. We notify and testify with the word of truth that Joseph Callus, who himself signed all which are above, was and is a legal and trustworthy notary, whose public acts and scriptures and testimonies were summoned and are summoned recently both before the court and out of court, has unquestionable and full fatih as a testimony of this case. Jacob Guicciard, a citizen of Valletta obliges himself to pay back a certain sum of money, 277 scudos to Bailiff Don Antonio Manoel. Beside this, Francis Lucan obliges himself to pay 277 scudos to Emanuel Ribera from Lisbon from the 555 scudos in total for which he and Peter Le Garange bought goods from Ribera; Guicciard and the Bailiff intervened and thus paid certain parts of the money to Ribera. Guicciard rejects all his rights about the 277 scudos in question which Antoni Manoel ceded upon him previously. Nr. 2.

[1] An Indiction was any year of a 15-years cycle, a date counting system used in medieval Europe, traditionally in the Papal State or entities realted to the Church. Each year was numbered within the cycle.
